what we have to do with the kuan yin statue that we had bought before we put it onto the altar table?
Its really a matter of superstition, especially for Chinese sect Buddhism where you give the statue to a monk or monastery so that they would pray and cleanse the statue, then give you a auspicious date that you may come and take the statue home.
For me, this practice is really a cultural thing and isn’t part of Buddhism at all, its more Taoist. The best thing you should do, and the most rational, is to clean up a nice clean altar, put some water as a sign of purity of heart, offer 3 incense sticks as a sign of the three gems of Buddhism and fresh flowers as a sign of beauty and serenity. Get the family out to pay respect to the altar together and then on a daily basis offer incense with a pure heart.
People bring in Kuan Yin statues to the home and business for different reasons, mainly and wrongly, for luck. The Buddhist scriptures state that the Buddha mind is in everybody and having a statue is simply to remind you of your practices and to be moral and good people. However I understand the cultural deep rooted beliefs and so when you pray to Kuan Yin, please include a prayer for all sentient beings as well as your own family. This way ‘luck’ is shared for everyone.
