Visiting London: Three Things To Do
There is something for everyone to see and do in the capital city of England – London. London has over 300 museums and more than 200 galleries. There is always an exhibition, show or event happening somewhere in London.
Heathrow airport is extremely busy with flights arriving and departing from all over the world, making it very accessible. Once you have landed here there are several options of transportation to choose from. Using public transport in London is easy and can be the easiest and cheapest way to get around. There are many fascinating places to visit and literally hundreds of things to do in London. The below is just a taster of some of London’s most popular tourist attractions.
Buckingham Palace – Buckingham Palace is one of England’s most famous palaces and is the official home of Queen Elizabeth II. Every summer the doors of the State Rooms are open to the public. Buckingham Palace was acquired by King George III for Queen Charlotte, and has a long and colourful history.
George IV decided to convert the house into a palace. The Palace became the official residence of Queen Victoria in 1837. Guests are often entertained in the State Rooms during Royal ceremonial occasions. Some of the finest English and French furniture in the world can be found in the lavishly decorated rooms. Artwork such as that of Rembrandt, Rubens, Poussin and Vermeer adorn the walls of the palace. You can also tour the 29 acre gardens and they also have annual exhibitions. You have to have this on your itinerary for a London holiday.
The British Museum – The British Museum is world renowned for its collection of objects exploring the history and culture of man. This impressive museum is home to over seven million objects. Founded in 1753, the displays range from prehistoric to modern. The Rosetta Stone, the Portland Vase and the Parthenon Sculptures are a few of the most notable items on display there.
It has a world renowned Egyptian collection of mummies and there is a special tomb like room dedicated to the life of the wealthy Egyptian, Negamun. There are also dedicated areas in the museum for Medieval Europe, Chinese Art and Watches and Clocks. The central hub of the museum is the glass domed Great Court. It is the largest covered public square in Europe and was designed by Lord Norman Foster. You would not see everything inside if you spent days trying.
The London Eye – The modern icon that is the London Eye - also called the Millennium Wheel - is a must see when visiting London. “Boarding a flight” on the London Eye will give you an entirely different perspective on this amazing city. Standing at an impressive 135 metres tall, this awesome riverside wheel is a famous part of London’s modern skyline. Through the glass pods you get a 360 degree vie of London. It’s possible on a clear day to see twenty-five miles all around.
You will get a fantastic birds-eye-view of many of London’s top attractions, including big Ben, Canary Wharf and the Houses of Parliament – even as far as Windsor castle on a clear day. Just one revolution at its slow and steady pace takes about half an hour. This is a very popular attraction and you can expect long queues for booking tickets and waiting to board the flight. You can book online if you want to save yourself some time. There are different packages on offer to choose from which will depend on your needs. You can upgrade to a Fast Track Ticket, which allows you to check in 15 minutes before the flight. If the fancy takes you it’s possible to have a glass of champagne or a personal London guide. This is the best and only way to get a true panoramic view of the city.
Many people love to return to London often. You can easily get around this vast historic city by taxi cab if you have the budget! There are both licensed and unlicensed minicabs operating in London. London – like New York – is famous for its taxis, except for that these ones are black and are called Hackney cabs. These are all licensed and it is better to use these that the often less reputable “minicab” taxis.
Alternatively, if you don’t fancy using public transport or taxis, there are many car hire companies which operate from London Heathrow Airport and the same from London’s smaller airport; Gatwick. The airports have excellent facilities for motorists, and you can hire a self-drive or even chauffeur-driven vehicle.
Any hired car rental agreement should be read thoroughly so that you know what excesses and such you will have to pay in the event of an accident. Other specialist insurance products such as gap insurance, car warranties and breakdown insurance will generally be taken care of by the hire car company so you do not need to worry about these things. Make yourself aware of the details of breakdown cover and who to call if it happens, be sure that you have 24-hour cover in place! Other insurance products may be offered to give you added peace of mind – for instance key or windscreen insurance – which may incur extra costs. Make sure that you read the document carefully before signing! Reputable car hire companies available include Hertz, Avis and Budget to name a few.
You may prefer to use the excellent public transport system instead of hiring a car to get you to your hotel or bed and breakfast (B&B). Regular trains come and go from London’s many major railway stations to destinations all over the country – including to the seaside resort of Brighton, which has often been called “London-by-the-Sea”.
London is an amazing and beautiful city, no matter what time of year that you visit. With such a multitude of sights to see, things to do, places to visit or clubs to party in, you will always be able to find something exciting to do while visiting London. As the famous Samuel Johnson quotation goes:
“When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life”.
