My brother is 50yrs old and next week will marry a 27yr old Thai girl i wonder will it work?
Would you ask the same question if the woman (at age 27 she’s definetely a woman, not a GIRL) was British or German or American?
So with regards to ethnicity I don’t really see any problems: My father is German and my mother Thai/Chinese (my father’s only 6 months older than she though and they got to know each other in university) and they’re together since 1968.
The only thing that might cause difficulties in communication between Europeans and Thai people is, that Thai people have the notion of “face/image” whereas Europeans don’t really care about what other people might think of them.
So eg Thai people have a hard time admitting mistakes. So when you’re in the fight with them, they will never give in saying something like “well, you’re right and I’m wrong and I admit it” because that would mean a loss of “face”, but they would rather say something like “Well, you’re turning my words around, what you say, is exactly what I said from the very beginning! Only you never listen!” The European might get upset considering that behaviour as stubborn, in fact it’s not.
What might also lead to difficulties is the way in which Europeans and Thais handle criticism: Europeans regard critique as negative feedback, for a Thai person it might again mean “a loss of face”. So Thai people give a lot of compliments and positive feedback – and they criticize not by uttering criticism but by “not making compliments”. And the Thai person might be very upset if the European doesn’t get it. Another rule is: never criticize a Thai person in front of other people, only at home, even if she’s wrong – elsewise you’re in serious trouble and will be completely ignored for a week at least.
Oh, and something else he will have to get used to, is that she – since there is no social system in Thailand and children have to support their old parents – she will most likely want to send money to her family on a regular basis. My parents usually sent an amount of about 2500 Euros once a year as long as the parents were alive and that’s enough. Your brother should say no if his wife wants to send more.
As long as they’re aware of these and more cultural differences things should be ok.
And with regards to age: It depends on the person. Personally I can’t imagine being together with someone that much older than I, but sometimes it just so happens that a person is older or younger than her age and things might just work out fine.
And well, last but not least: I hope he didn’t meet her in the tourist regions, but in the “real Thailand” – otherwise I’m suspicious of it as well. It’s usually a good sign if she prefers to live in Thailand with him.
