Armor Yoroi

Which weapons could penetrate the Samurai Ō-yoroi and which could not? Where exactly were the weak points?
Since the Viking vs Samurai episode on Deadliest Warrior, I’ve tried to find this out, because for some reason they never tested anything but the Samurai helmet. Lots of sites talk about what would or would not go through mail, but on Japanese armor I hear almost nothing.
Due to the varying styles of armor, you’d do better to look at individual pieces of armor rather than classify all yoroi as a whole. There were many forms, included laquered wooden plates stitched onto layers of silk, iron plates held together with maille links, and later period solid plate pieces. A tactical evaluation would depend on which style was employed, and how it was employed. Some armor had vertically slatted pieces, and some had horizontal, and you’d have to adjust your approach based on that, as well as the type and thickness of materials. A long spear was generally a good weapon to pierce anything, whereas a sword would have to be employed with much more precision. Basically when you’re talking piercing power, you’re talking about overall profile (smaller profile=better penetratation.) The larger the profile, the more blunt crushing force involved. Weak points in a typical infantry yoroi would be the neck, under the armpits, the wrists, and the knees: basically anywhere there was a gap or space in the armor.
