what is the significance of a beehive on a building In either a shape or full 3D sculptured in the stone work?
There are a number of buildings around Cumbria with a behive either on them or carved into the stone work usually at the ridge of the roof or at the top of a gable end. I know there was a shop in Whitehaven called the Beehive so is this a symbol of the Chamber of trade or something similar
It is meant as a symbol that the building was made by happy builders …. as opposed to slaves for instance … kind of like a mark to show that it was built with hard work and no corners were cut.

The beehive recalls a famous German phrase: “Work makes life sweet.”
