What’s solid wood compared to laminate or pressed?
I have read that a certain furnishing store (well known brand) has almost only laminate or pressed wood—or wood particles glued together. So when that retiler says it’s staine, clear lacquered solid pine, is it good quality or low one as i’ll find myself replacing it within one year or such!
If you’re speaking of an Ikea store, you are correct, with the exception that their hardware is exceptional in their cabinets and filing systems. They hold up very well as we use them in retail stores. If you are looking for coffee tables, or furniture type case goods – go with all wood species interiors. Usually the interior boxes or drawers may be of a less expensive wood with the outer woods better quality. Veneers are wood overlays on cheaper wood bases. Of course, solid wood furniture pieces will last forever if you can afford it. My motto is buy the best you can afford – even if thats Ikea. I also purchase antiques because of their hand made construction. Depends on your budget. And yes, usually quality of the furniture does drive the price. Walnuts, cherrys, mahogany, pecan and other exotics or fruitwoods are more expensive. Pine is cheap and a softer wood. Laminates and pressed MDF boards can hold up depending on their use, but if the hardware and construction is poor, don’t bother.
