Shan Buddha

Visiting Hong Kong, tourist sugesstion welcomed?
Hi, I’m visiting Hong Kong with my girlfriend soon for a romantic getaway. I am in need of suggestions on where to visit.
We live in southern California, so I’m not interested in visiting Disneyland or Ocean Park (aka Sea World). I’m not interested in shopping, so that’s out too. Women’s market is totally off-limits.
I heard Victoria’s Peak (Tai Ping Shan(sp?)) is suppose to have a beautiful view of Hong Kong Island. Peninsula Hotel is also suppose to have a great view. I’ve heard there’s some cultural site, a big Buddha statue somewhere.
We’re big fan of food, and diverse mix of it. Restaurant suggestions? From sushi to dim sum, its all good for me.
Thanks for helping out,

Victoria Peak is indeed a good place to get a really nice bird’s eye view of Hong Kong Island. To make it more special, you might want to go there at dusk so that you can see the lights go on as day slowly turns to night. And if it happens to be a full moon on that night, that’ll make it even more romantic. While you might not be interested in going to Ocean Park, the cable car at Ngong Ping might interest you as it gives 360 degree views of the surroundings as it crosses to Lantau Island. Once on Lantau Island, go visit the Giant Buddha at the Po Lin Monastery. You can also try the vegetarian fare their restaurant offers.
Since you say you are both big food fans (dare I say you are ‘foodies’?), you will not find it hard to find restaurants where you can try authentic Chinese cuisine that is really delicious. But to combine great food and special surroundings (in a manner of speaking), a visit to the Jumbo Floating Restaurant is a must. This boat turned restaurant can be found in Aberdeen Harbour. For more info, try this link to their site – http://www.jumbo.com.hk/eng/main.php. It is considered a pricey place to eat in HK, but trust me, the food is worth it. The fish we had there was really good!
Tsim Sha Tsui has lots of very good restaurants that you will see while walking down the streets. One restaurant that I will recommend in that area is the restaurant in Shangrila Hotel. Their buffet serves an excellent selection of different cuisines that include Chinese, Indian and Japanese. My best part though is the dessert buffet. I can never forget those tiny cakes and the chocolate fountain.
On Hong Kong Island, you might want to try walking around the Mid levels area to see the many bars and restaurants there. You might also want to try browsing around on Hollywood street in Mid levels to look at antiques.
Other places you might want to try are Lan Kwai Fong (for nightlife) and Murray House in Stanley. For a list of restaurants with reviews, try this site – http://www.fodors.com/world/asia/china/hong-kong/restaurants-nam.html.
Wherever you end up eating in HK, don’t ever forget to have dim sum. This is usually served from midmorning to lunch. The dumplings in HK in all its varieties are simply the best! (Now I’m getting hungry! I wish we had dim sum that good here in NY.) Well, hope that helps and enjoy your vacation!
