Help please, How can I stop my 3yr Golden Retriever barking?
The problem it would appear is Seperation Anxiety as he barks non stop when we are at work, neighbours are complaining, fair enough! We have tried rousing when he was a puppy, time out in bathroom, zap and citronella collars, Kongs, burning sandalwood, Pheromone burner & recently a dog behaviourist with calming exercises (still working through them) and a Retreiver as a playmate BUT nothing works. The vet thinks he is epileptic and is on daily meds however 2 don’t seem to be related. They are now locked inside the house all day to save the neighbours. Is there anything else we could do?
Not sure what you mean by “rousing.”
Time outs don’t work for dogs. They aren’t time aware enough to understand what is happening and why.
Shock and citronella collars only work as well as the trainer using them. They can’t fix the problem by themselves. The key with them is to remember to praise the dog heavily when he is quiet. Correction while barking with no reinforcement while quiet will not stop a dog barking (and will usually make it worse).
Correction for barking when the dog is barking out of anxiety will definitely make the problem worse.
Focus on the cause of the barking, rather than the barking itself. If separation anxiety is the issue, work on that and the barking should improve on its own.
Your behaviorist is probably having you work on desensitization exercises. These might include things like
-Ignoring your dog for at least 10 minutes just before you leave and immediately upon your return.
-Leaving and returning after just a moment over and over again so your dog gets the idea you really will return.
-Crate training to prevent destruction and help the dog feel more safe and secure.
Why does the vet think he is epileptic? Is he having seizures? Those can be scary and could increase his anxiety.
Stick with your behaviorist. It sounds to me like you are on the right track with the relaxation exercises because that is dealing with the underlying separation anxiety that is causing the barking.
