Fancy red and Fancy Purplish red diamond are very rare. Should a diamond be given a Fancy Red grade it means that the diamond has a color of pure red.
Some red diamonds contain modifying colors for example fancy brownish red and fancy orangy red. These too are actually very scarce although definitely not as scarce as Fancy Red or Purplish red. Various other red diamonds have reddish overtones like Fancy Reddish Brown. These diamonds are not quite as scarce and for this reason their price is significantly less in comparison with the other reds.
Where are red diamonds found?
Red diamonds are highly hard to find and the Argyle mine in Australia is the only reliable source of supply. This mine yields between 90 – 95% of all pink and red diamonds. Now and again red diamonds have been located in other countries such as Brazil and Africa.
Where does the red color come from?
Presently there isn’t 100% evidence of how the diamond acquires this phenomenal color, but industry experts feel that the color is developed from nitrogen entering the gaps between the atoms that the diamond is built of.
How come red diamonds so expensive?
Just about anything scarce and sought after is usually expensive and any very strongly colored diamond is scarce and in demand by investors. All Vivid natural color diamonds are costly as these colors are the rarest. Red diamonds are so rare that many think that their price might double in the next couple of years, and there have been stories in the past of selling prices jumping almost overnight.

The Kazanjian Red diamond is an Emerald cut diamond and weighs 5.05 carats. It was was discovered in South Africa in the 1920′s. Before it was cut it weighed 25 carats. After the second world war it was discovered concealed in a salt mine in Bavaria and then appeared to disappear for many years until in 2007 Douglas Kazanjian received this diamond for study and he succeeded in tracing the diamond’s incredible historical past. The diamond can be viewed at the American Museum of Natural History.
The Rob Red diamond weighs 0.59 carats and was uncovered in Brazil.
