Gardening Under A Walnut Tree Can Be A Challenge

Many, many years ago I lived in an old house in Ann Arbor that had quite a few 80 foot walnut trees, latin name Juglans Regia. It did not take long before I noticed that a lot of the perennials I was planting were dying;petunias, peonies, roses and impatiens would just not grow or bloom. I began to doubt my standing as an A-1 gardener.

It turns out that walnut trees are a landscape problem as certain plants can not survive beneath them. This is due to a poisonous substance that leaches from the walnut trees called juglone-I sure would not be eating any veggies or herbs grown near or under a walnut tree( I heard somewhere that it was an ingredient in rat poison many years ago…not sure if that is true or just some kind of urban legend). So if you have hanging plants under a giant and elegant tree that keep dying and you do not know why, try looking up to see if that tree is a walnut tree. If it is then that is one garden problem you can consider solved!

Do not fret! All is not lost if you have a giant walnut tree. They are a lovely addition to any garden and provide wonderful shade. Never mind the old wives tale to beware the shade of a walnut, because I myself can not think of a nicer place to spend a hot summer afternoon. Not to mention all the wonderful walnuts you can collect for whatever you use them for.

Here is a pretty thorough list of plants that I have had success growing under my walnut trees:

Annual plants that can grow under a walnut tree:

Pansie

Begonia

Marigold

Morning Glory

Flower Bulbs:

Winter Aconite

Narcissus

Tulip

Blue Scilla

Snow Drop

Perennial plants that can grow beneath a walnut tree:

Aster

Common Milkweed (A Main stay in my garden!)

Hosta

Many ferns, for example Japanese Painted Fern

Coral Bell

Day Lilly

Pachysandra

Black Eyed Susan

Spider Wort

Dutchman’ Breeches

Violet

Bugle Weed

Jack in the Pulpit

Wild Geranium

Joe-Pye Weed

Creeping Phlox

Sedum

Trillium

Bee Balm

Shrubs that can grow beneath a walnut tree:

Boxwood

Oakleaf Hydrangea

This is perhaps not the longest list and I am positive that many more plants would or could do well; these are just the ones I have tried and had success with in the garden’s I take care of and my own garden. Have fun gardening and planting some plants that will actually thrive for a change. And you know, if all else fails under your walnut tree then put some cool garden decor, recycled glass gazing ball or perhaps a bird feeder there to provide the area with some extra visual interest!

Dr. Demento Presents: Greatest Christmas Novelty CD

The title might be immodest, but it’s accurate. Just about every holiday song parody and comedy sketch you can imagine is jimmied onto this hilarious, sprawling collection. While you’ll find a smattering of well-known Christmas wackiness (including “Grandma Got Run over by a Reindeer” and the Singing Dogs’ “Jingle Bells”), the Doctor’s specialty is unearthing the obscure, such as Wild Man Fischer’…

During the 1980s, one cartoon series ruled the airwaves… TheTransformers. This paragon of consumerism was created with a dual purpose–to entertain and to galvanize children to buy the toys. Somewhere along the line, the show became a cult favorite, so in 1986 they fashioned an epic tale of good versus evil specifically for the big screen. The result looked vaguely like an animated remake of Sta…
