Hermit Guru

General Hermit crab questions… thanks!?
I am getting 3 hermit crabs next weekend and I have a few general questions for you crab gurus:)
–What is their average lifespan?
–Is it true that you can feed them baby food?
–^^ If so, what is the appropriate portion to spoon into their dish?
–^^ If not, what food do you recommend? (portion?)
Also, how would I appropriately heat a 10 gallon tank? I have a budget of about $75, fyi:)
(I live in MN so I would need this information especially for winter!)
Thanks so much! All answers greatly appreciated!
(If you have any other recommendations, they’re also appreciated)
-No one knows for sure how long hermit crabs can survive in the wild. They can live for a decade or longer in a home that takes good care of them, though it is impossible to tell the age of the hermit crab when you obtain one so they might not live as long as ten years. You need to keep in mind when choosing this animal as a pet because they can have a longevity that you might not be prepared for.
-creatures actually love eating foods that are sweeter and less savory. You can give them fruit flavored baby food in flavors like:
Bananas and apples
Apples, kiwi, and mango
Apple sauce
Apples and sweet potato
Pears and apples
Fruit medley
Chiquita bananas
Sweet corn casserole
Papaya fruit dessert
Guava fruit dessert
Mango fruit dessert
- Put in a little bit and see if he eats it. If he does, put a little more in. I wouldn’t reccomend more than 3-4 servings, though, as he could (and maybe WOULD) over-eat himself.
- Hermies can eat fruits, veggies, hermit crab food.
The people foods that hermit crabs would love to eat are:
Bread, dried cereals, and crackers
Bananas, diced pears, apples, and coconut
Peeled grapes
Peanut butter
Spinach, shredded
Lettuce, shredded
Potatoes, cooked and cooled off
Do not forget to prepare the fresh foods into sizes that the hermit crabs can actually pick up and eat. It will be quite cruel to give them food that they love eating and make them struggle just to get a piece of it!
Hermit crabs are happiest kept at 72-80 F (22-27 C). If the temperature drops below 72 F on a regular basis, the crabs will likely become weak, stressed and ill. Unless living in a tropical climate, most owners will need to use a heater at least part of the time to keep the crab tank at optimal temperatures. Undertank heaters, lights, or a combination of both can be used to maintain appropriate temperatures.
Hope this helps, and GOOD LUCK!
