JFH Comments: Ocean Green has enough silica and alumina to be stable and enough boron + alkalis to melt well at cone 6; however, four things merit comment. First, Ocean Green is clearly in the realm of alkaline glazes with a sodium + potassium level of 0.52. Secondly, the recipe calls for Gerstley Borate or a substitute. As yet, there is no clearly identified 1:1 substitute that will give identical results in all recipes. If you do not have Gerstley Borate on hand you would need to duplicate the unity formula using whatever substitute you decide to buy. While doing this, it is usually helpful to replace the EPK with a good ball clay. Third, with the low level of clay, and if you do not have Gerstley Borate, this glaze may need a percent or two of bentonite to keep it well suspended. Fourth, the calculated expansion coefficient is high – this glaze may craze on some cone 6 clay bodies.
