Chinese Cloisonne

The Culture of Cloisonne Art
To Paint different patterns with variety enamels on the surface of red copper, and then set with copper wire or metallic wire on the sides of these patterns, next burn with high degree of fire, they are the basic method on making Cloisonne which is one of Chinese art crafts.
This kind of art is popular in JingTai period of Ming Dynasty, and there was only one blue color at that time so that it called Cloisonne. Although the colors have completed now, people still use the previous name, because cloisonne has already become an art’s name, no color’s name.
It is said that JingTai is the son of XuanDe who was ever emphasis on the rule of copper quality and casting process. JingTai likes this kind of art deeply when he was still young, so under his father’s influence, he learned and studied more. However, his father had already reached extremely high on casting and there is no breakthrough any more. Therefore, JingTai wanted to make a big breakthrough on color. At last, he was successful and the palace decorations are almost used with cloisonne. Of cause, many cloisonne products came out during that time. ChengHua of Ming Dynasty inherited this art from Jing Tai and still endeavored to produce, so cloisonne objects in Jingtai and ChengHua periods are most common seen.
Latter time, cloisonne objects were produced by different periods, but it was not frequency any more. Until Qing Dynasty, this art began to popular again, but the quality could not compare with JingTai and ChengHua periods.
By and large, the copper of cloisonne in Ming Dynasty is better, and most are red copper. Besides, the mainly materials come from the natural minerals, and the color looks deep and vivid, such as red likes ruby, green likes turquoise.
Though the technique on making cloisonne art in Qing Dynasty had improved compared with Ming Dynasty, thin copper base, thin wire, bright color and complex patterns, they looks not as vivid as Ming Dynasty.
For the modern world, the cloisonne process has greatly improved, diverse models, a variety of decorative goods. What’s more, there come out many other cloisonne products yet, like bracelets.
