Where did the ‘old man’ or ‘wizard’ faces carved into living trees originate?
I had a hunch that the old man face carvings in live trees (non-art purposes) came frome the Druids of some of the pagan beliefs in Britain. I know many countries have variations of face in tree carvings but i would like to know this:~~~WHERE DID THE OLD MAN, OR WIZARD-ISH FACE(S) CARVED INTO TREES ORIGINATE AND WHAT IS/WAS THE PURPOSE BEHIND THEM? In the greater part of a century that I have studied I never run into anything but fiction with faces carved into living trees. However, I own and have seen many a wooden staff carved with both faces and animals. There is a folktale of a carved staff once was driven into the ground by its owner that frew to a huge tree over the centuries. Some of the carvings still showed in the branches and trunk.
