“Gate of the Sun”, or Puerta del Sol, is a very popular tourist spot in Madrid.
These gates at one time marked the entrance to Madrid. In the 15th century, like numerous medieval towns, Madrid was surrounded by a wall to protect it, and people could only go in through the gates. This made them known to traders and visitors from all over the world and the site remained a meeting place after the walls surrounding Madrid were taken down. And for many in Madrid, it is still a great place to meet friends and family, both old and new.
Beautiful Spanish architecture can be viewed all over the area, in addition to many statues and monuments, one of the most famous being the huge sculpture of a bear munching in the fruit from the madrone tree,(The Spanish word for this plant as well as the bear is a strong symbol for the people of Madrid).
In Puerta del Sol, there is a piece of concrete that marks the origination point of Spain’s six major highways that wind their way through the country. And if one visits during the New Year, you can visit the House of the Post Office where all the festivities take place. It’s not only a great place to start when exploring the city, but to begin exploring the entire country.
From Puerta Del Sol it is only a short walk to other popular attractions such as Plaza Mayor and Palacio Real, the Parliament is also nearby and the Metro is easily accessible from the area.
There are many side streets that have shops, restaurants, and many other attractions, so as much time as possible should be used to visit this section. If you can, try visiting the cafes and bars at night, when they are full of tourists and citizens of Madrid, since street performers entertain those that are there.
