The Psychology of Outdoor Fire Pits Has Deep Roots

If you ask someone why they like their fire pit, they may say they “like barbecuing” or, if they’re not as specific, that they think “it’s fun.Being drawn to and fascinated by fire is ingrained in human nature. People like things that make it easier to create and maintain fires because they like controlled fire.

Why humans like to be around fires? There are a few theories about it. Some guess that it offered people a better chance to survive previously when people existed in primitive conditions and had to fight dangerous animals such as lions. Many wild animals are afraid of fire, so if humans crowded around a fire pit they were safer. Also, a lot of dangerous beasts are nocturnal. Having a fire gives light that makes it harder for predators to encroach at night because it enables the human eyes to function better.

Another theory is that early humans used fire to cook. The cooking made their food safer, and that this is what conveyed the main survival advantage on the species at the time. Since food couldn’t be cooked without fire, an affinity for fires was passed on along with the genes involving a preference for cooked meals.

It is widely believed that mankind grew to enjoy fire because fire gave heat in chilly regions. Man needed to find a way to keep warn or risk extinction. As a result, those who loved fires had an advantage to survive in the dangerously cold areas.

In reality, there’s likely something to each of these tales. Our ancestors kept predators away, lit up the dark night, stayed warm, and cooked their food with fire pits. All of these combined likely added up to a strong human genetic predisposition to enjoy fires, especially those that are contained.

Today, there are numerous pragmatic reasons for owning a fire pit. Cooking and providing light are still high on the list of reasons people get them. You want a barbecue but there are no grills around?  Then get yourself a commercially  made and easy to transport fire pit. Built-in pits can be quite decorative and give a rustic atmosphere to a location even if the property is actually in the suburbs.

Whilst firepits psychology probably won’t be a topic of conversation at a barbecue, once in a while it’s enjoyable to picture our family who came before us sitting and preparing their meals near a fire, with light dancing on a cave’s walls.
